Why is my milk supply low?
Firstly , what makes your think that your milk supply is low? During the first 3 months of life your newborn shows different behaviors and cry often, but this is not necessarily because of low milk supply which is often a misconception. Babies cry for many reason even for being close to mom! If the baby is having reflux, mother has overactive letdown, if the baby is colicky all these reason can be a factor for the baby’s cry. The mother should check if the baby is crying before a feed, during or after a feed. It makes a difference in knowing why the baby is crying, if the baby cries and arch’s his back, is mostly due to a fast let down of the milk that the baby is not able to adjust to. If the baby is refusing breast in middle of the feed it is also a reason due to overactive letdown. Just because a baby cries often does not mean it has to be given formula, because the milk supply  takes time to establish, it is necessary to manage it with eating right, reducing stress levels and speaking to a breastfeeding counselor can help drastically improve the baby’s latch and feeding behavior.

My baby sleeps so much, should i wake my baby to feed?
It is ok for your baby to sleep up-to  5-6 hours ONCE in a day, the rest of the times feed on demand unless the baby is very sleepy and not feeding well due to jaundice, no weight gain, very few wet or dirty diapers, because a jaundiced baby needs to be helped to suck. Expressing your milk in your baby’s mouth while feeding can help your baby get the milk and also eliminate jaundice.. Always “FEED ON DEMAND”. A standard is that a baby can feed from 8 to 12 times in a day or more.  Don’t worry, this phase too shall pass!

My baby is refusing my breast!
This could be due to your overactive let down which most mothers have. Check your vitamin D levels and have a supplement if it is low or even sufficient because a breastfeeding mother needs extra levels of vitamin d while exclusively breastfeeding.

Babies can also refuse the breast when they are not able to suck because they are sleepy, expressing some milk initially into their mouth can help them latch on or rock your baby till he is drowsy and then feed.

Never let the baby cry it out as they will refuse the breast if they have been left crying for a long time!

My baby's poop is light greenish!
A light green poop or lime-green can either be due to an infection (virus ) ..however this will be milk, goal is to keep breastfeeding on demand.

Another reason is due to foremilk and hindmilk imbalance, increase in fatty foods like ghee & nuts. Eat on time to hunger , keep yourself hydrated and try to have fennel water before each feed as this will help improve your letdown. Reduce stress and have good sleep, get help if you can at least in the first 3-5 months of your postpartum period.

My baby poops once in 2-3 days, he does not poop daily!
This is due to foremilk and hindmilk imbalance, increase in fatty foods like ghee & nuts. Eat on time to hunger , keep yourself hydrated and try to have fennel water before each feed as this will help improve your letdown. Reduce stress and have good sleep, get help if you can at least in the first 3-5 months of your postpartum period. The mother also needs to work on improving her digestion system because her gut resembles the baby’s gut and if the mother has constipation the baby may have it too. So eating foods that can digest well, will also help the baby poop better and also reduce reflux in the baby.

My baby's poop is mucosy, why?
A mucosy poop can mean that the baby is having a blocked nose, phlegm has accumulated and is excreted with poop, it can also mean that there is a post nasal drip due to reflux and the milk regurgitates back to his nose. This is nothing to worry about but it can be tiring for the mother, they key is to feed in laid back position, thereby reducing the reflux in your baby, pat on his back to help him burp, keep your baby upright after feed and as much as possible try to make your baby sleep in 45 degree angle . Do not feed lying down as they can aggravate the symptoms and cause a fussy baby. The mother also needs to work on improving her digestion system because her gut resembles the baby’s gut and if the mother has constipation the baby may have it too. So eating foods that can digest well, will also help the baby poop better and also reduce reflux in the baby.

My baby doesn't sleep on the bed!
Your baby is used to being so close to u Mama! However it is very tiring for you to go through sleepless nights. Up until 6 months of age till your baby has started solids, your baby’s sleep schedule can go out of whack anytime, this can be due to milk infection, your diet, your stress levels, your gut health, baby’s reflux because all of this takes some time to stabilize, the goal is to “MANAGE IT”. Managing your diet, sleep, understanding your baby’s behavior due to  different triggers , keeping a baby log will help you to stabilize your milk supply , your eating and sleep pattern according to the needs of your baby, never underestimate extra help that you can get to get that rest! If a particular food that you had eaten had made your baby fussy and less sleepy then avoid it, answer to your baby’s cues as soon as possible to avoid them being hysterical and this can also affect their overall development.
